CCCD: Enhancing Capacity to Develop Global and Regional Environmental Projects in the Pacific
Brief Project Description
The GEF funded Medium Size Project (MSP) was approved by the GEF CEO on the 2nd December 2014. For the project, UNDP is the appointed Implementing Agency with SPREP acting as the Executing Agency for this project. The project document was signed by the heads of UNDP (Samoa MCO) and SPREP on the 23 March 2015.
The project aims to build national and regional capacities of Pacific Island Countries (through SPREP) to develop global and regional environmental projects in the Pacific. All 14 Pacific Island Countries eligible for GEF funding are members of SPREP and through the annual SPREP Governing Council Meeting in 2011; these countries have instructed the SPREP secretariat to seek GEF accreditation. As a direct result, this project is designed to strengthen SPREP’s institutional, systemic and individual capacity to meet strict GEF accredited standards. The 4 components of the MSP are:
1. Enhancing Internal Control Frameworks to meet GEF Minimum Fiduciary Standards;
2. Develop Environmental and Social Safeguard Policy;
3. Develop Gender Mainstreaming Policy and Guideline; and
4. Strengthening Information, Communication and Technology Systems.
