  • Samoa One UN-YEP and Savai’i Koko: Champions Who Leave No One Behind Jul 7, 2017

    Savai’I Koko owners, Saleimoa (Sale) and Rosie Va’ai harvest cocoa beans from their family plantation and collect cocoa produced by neighbouring smallholding farmers from the western Savai’i area and beyond. The beans then go through the fermenting and drying stages at the Savai’i Koko farm, before being stored, packed and sent to Whittaker’s chocolate producers in New Zealand. Savai’i Koko, located in Asau, Savai’i is one of the main exporters of cocoa beans in Samoa. It provides local communities with employment opportunities and invests resources in the development of cocoa beans for export.

    This week in Apia, Samoa, government officials from across the Pacific joined global experts from the private sector in a regional dialogue to discuss the role of climate risk financing in the region’s resilience to climate change. The forum culminated in an agreement to submit the idea of establishing mechanisms for insurance and risk financing dedicated to addressing climate change impacts, to the Leaders meeting of the Pacific Islands Forum.

    Around fifty participants from Savaii representing community-based women’s committees, men’s committees, village councils, youth, civil society and non-governmental organisations gathered on Wednesday, 3 May at the Savaiian Hotel to attended the Operational Phase 6 of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP) workshop, and to learn more about existing environmental problems affecting them and to consider practical solutions to address these.

  • Choosing Organic Farming for Brighter Future May 1, 2017

    Mr. Iese Palauni Matai’a, recently graduated from a three months training - the Organic Warriors Academy - where he learned about composting, field planting, common pests and value-adding processing. With his new skills in organic farming, Mr. Matai´a now plans to focus on planting herbs and spices to supply hotels and restaurants in Apia.
