Vaiala Seawall Tree-Planting for SDGs

To commemorate UNDP 50th Anniversary and to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Vaiala community came out to support the tree planting activity as part of the celebration programme. Vaiala village mayor and village youth joined officers from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and UNDP in planting 17 native coastal tree species along the Vaiala Seawall on Tuesday 22nd, March, 2016, at 3pm. The 17 native trees planted represent the 17 SDGs. Earlier in the morning a parade through town led by the Samoa Police Band took place with 17 schools participating.

The initiative aimed at helping the students learn and familiarize themselves with the Global Goals. Since then, pupils and teachers, have been debating on how we can translate the SDGs into action. During the ceremony, one representative from each school will be making a short presentation on how best Samoa can work through communities and Government to make the SDGs a reality.

The One-UN Youth Employment Programme, lead by the Division for Youth of the Ministry of Women, Social Community and Development, is supported - and draws on the expertise -of five United Nations agencies: UNDP, ILO, FAO, UNESCO and UNV. The programme aims at reducing youth unemployment by improving their employability through capacity building and by creating an enabling environment for young entrepreneurs and small businesses.

The Tokelau Youth Group is a network of 60 young people from the three atolls, supported by their respective local governments called “Taupulega”. The group was established in the late 1990's but, due to to funding constraints, they only managed to revive itself in September 2015 during the South-South Sub Regional Youth Initiative on Climate Change Meeting.

Building the resilience of small scale tourism operations to climate change risks is the primary objective of a UNDP-GEF funded project, Enhancing the resilience of tourism-reliant communities to climate change risks. The project is now in its third year of implementation by the Samoa Tourism Authority.
