Youth get ready for employment in the cultural industries

Eleven female and nine male learned the traditional skills of siapo production, mat weaving, wood carving and canoe making. The skills training course was implemented as part of the Government of Samoa and One-UN Youth Employment Programme, with financial support being provided by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Vaiala Seawall Tree-Planting for SDGs

To commemorate UNDP 50th Anniversary and to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Vaiala community came out to support the tree planting activity as part of the celebration programme. Vaiala village mayor and village youth joined officers from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and UNDP in planting 17 native coastal tree species along the Vaiala Seawall on Tuesday 22nd, March, 2016, at 3pm. The 17 native trees planted represent the 17 SDGs. Earlier in the morning a parade through town led by the Samoa Police Band took place with 17 schools participating.
Marching for a better future

The initiative aimed at helping the students learn and familiarize themselves with the Global Goals. Since then, pupils and teachers, have been debating on how we can translate the SDGs into action. During the ceremony, one representative from each school will be making a short presentation on how best Samoa can work through communities and Government to make the SDGs a reality.
