ONE-UN Youth Employment Programme (YEP): Learning Skills for LifeAug 4, 2017
The One UN Youth Employment Programme has been collaborating with the Samoa Chamber of Commerce since 2016 on an Internship programme involving unemployed youth. After 10 weeks of on the job training, the employer may wish to offer full-time employment.
Several youth have indeed demonstrated their worthiness and are now employed however others walk away with more experience than they had previously to help them find a job elsewhere. The One UN YEP team maintains close links with these youths until they have found good jobs.
During a field visit to Savaii on 1-2 August 2017, the UNDP Team and YEP Project Manager caught up with 2, out of the 4 Interns at the Vaimoana Resort in Asau. Both are now into their 6th week of the on the job training. For the two young people the future looks bright. Resort owner, Rosie Vaai has been very pleased with their performances, and is considering offering them full-time jobs.
For 20-year old Wesley Travis, the experience as a waiter and kitchen assistant has meant that he is able to remain gainfully occupied and support himself and his parents with the allowance he has received through the programme. A 2016 graduate of the Samoa Marine Academy of the National University of Samoa, Wesley is awaiting an opportunity from Samoa Shipping Services but in the meantime the Internship at the Vaimoana is giving him more skills and a chance to work closer to home.
Also, serving his 6th week as an Intern at the Vaimoana Resort is Falani Lopaoo. Falani has been working in house-keeping and laundry. Asked for his views, he expressed that he has really enjoyed the work. Moreover, the allowance, though limited, allows him to help his family out with expenses and being family-minded “that’s all that matters to him”. He has also relished the chance to influence other members of his extended family to find jobs in the tourism industry or other local businesses and not to remain idle.
For job and training opportunities like these (and many more) why not sign up to the E-Youth Hub
A Youth Career Expo will be held on 24 October. All are welcome.
