Youth groups receive grants for environmental projects

The Youth Climate Action Network (YCAN) with representatives from 12 villages in Upolu and Savaii received a grant of USD 47,500. The Network will implement environmental projects focused on four main areas: waste management, rehabilitation of ecosystems, replanting and conservation of forests to protect watersheds and birdlife, and agricultural activities based upon sound ecological principles to support livelihoods generation for unemployed youth.

Globally, during the fortnight under the “Orange the world” call, over 450 events are planned in more than 70 countries throughout the 16 days. They include the lighting of major monuments, and numerous activities involving civil society such as dialogue sessions with faith-based leaders, film screenings, theatre and dance performances, rallies, marches, marathons and digital activism via social media platforms.

Global Event Turns The World UN Blue to mark 70th anniversary of the United Nations

World famous landmarks from Australia’s Sydney Opera House to the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, from the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro to the Empire State Building in New York, were lit blue. Other participants include Russia’s Hermitage Museum, the ancient city of Petra in Jordan, the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, Edinburgh Castle and Central Hall Westminster in the United Kingdom, Table Mountain in South Africa, Japan’s Sky Tree Tower and the Alhambra in Spain, among many others. Samoa was the only Pacific Island Country to joint this global campaign.

Twelve women who intend to run for 2016 elections are attending a four-day training aiming at building their skills for running in the elections effectively and becoming a good parliamentarian.
