The Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development (MWCSD) together with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will host the third and final workshop for Phase I of the Transformational Leadership Development Programme (TLDP), which addresses gender inequality. The third in the series of training is being conducted from 27-30 November 2013 at the St Therese Retreat and Resort at Tofamamao, Leauvaa.

The TLDP is being used successfully in many parts of the world to address deeply rooted development challenges.

Two exploratory missions attended by a number of senior government officials and community members identified the need for this programme to be made available in Samoa.  Since then, the government has adopted this methodology as a key element of its programme to address gender equality issues, as part of its Gender Sector programme for the period 2013-2018.

“While working in Ethiopia, I guided a similar program through six years of iterations that had extraordinary impact at every level and in every sector of society. “  Former UNDP Resident Representative, Ms Nileema Noble, who introduced the programme to Samoa stated.

“You should know that within UNDP as well, at country office level and at headquarters, these approaches have guided us in how we organize ourselves and manage our work. We intend to use the transformational methodology to build on the strong spiritual and cultural values in Samoa to build an even fairer and more just society”, Ms Noble added.

The TLDP has produced Break Through Initiatives (BTIs) or activities that will enable participants to design and achieve greater gender equity and other positive outcomes in organizations and communities throughout Samoa.

With years of collective expertise behind them on these issues, Ms Gulan Kripalani of India, and Mr Allan Henry Henderson of the USA will be facilitating the workshop this week. This final workshop will also complete the training of the Core Group Trainers who will upscale the programme across the country.

Participants include members of government, parliamentarians, private sector, youth, civil society, faith based organizations as well as the media.
