Today, the United Nations are celebrating the 2015 International Youth Day under the theme “Youth Civic Engagement”. The aim of this Day is to promote and raise awareness on inclusive engagement of young people at political, economical and social level as the most effective strategy to shape a better future for us all.

As stated by the Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-Moon: "In this landmark year, as leaders prepare to adopt a bold new vision for sustainable development, the engagement of youth is more valuable than ever. At this critical moment in history, I call on young people to demand and foster the dramatic progress so urgently needed in our world. "

Many countries across the world are commemorating the International Youth Day and Samoa is also joining with a very ambitious programme of events.

The Samoa National Youth Council (SNYC), in partnership with the Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development (MWCSD), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) and the Embassy of the United States is leading the organization of a very ambitious event aiming at fostering youth participation.

The Street art and busking fair is going to be held today at Sogi Recreational Area, next to the Malaefatu Play Space from 9:00am to 3:00pm. Keynote speakers will be the CEO of the MWCSD, Fuimapoao Beth Onesemo Tuilaepa, the President of the Samoa National Youth Council, Jennifer Marion Ula – Fruean and the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations for Samoa, Niue, Cook Islands and Tokelau, Ms. Lizbeth Cullity.

After the opening ceremony we invite the public to join us and enjoy all the interesting activities we have planned for the day. To mention a few, there will be civic engagement street art demonstrations, social entrepreneurship crafting demonstrations and creative busking in which young Samoan artists and performers will have the opportunity to showcase their talent, imagination and energy.
