Hon. Deputy PM,

Hon. Members of the Cabinet

Members of the Diplomatic Corps,

NUS Vice-Chancellor,

Representatives of the Media,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you all to the Media Awards for Excellence in Gender-Sensitive Reporting.

I am delighted to be here and, first of all, would like to thank UN Women and the NUS School of Media and Journalism for promoting this initiative, that is part – as you all know -  of the Increasing Political Participation of Women in Samoa programme.

Also, I would like to congratulate the journalists for their hard work over the last few months. Although at the UN we have limited resources to monitor the media coverage, we know that between November 2015 and the end of March 2016, more than 150 articles and news items have been broadcast about Women and Politics.

Tonight we are here to acknowledge and celebrate your work and efforts to keep the public opinion informed during the elections. The information you disseminated made a tremendous difference both for the candidates and the voters.

Through your timely reporting, you helped improving the public’s understanding of women’s political participation.

You played a pivotal role in challenging stereotypes about women, leadership and decision-making.

By raising awareness and fostering debates you also supported the candidates in their engagement activities with communities.

Since March last year, your work has been crucial to give visibility and strengthen our programme for women’s political participation - the IPPWS – but, most importantly, with accurate information and professionalism you helped the voters’ shape their opinions.

This is what we want to honour tonight.

To conclude,  I would like to encourage you to keep on promoting gender equality, women’s leadership and participation through high –quality and balanced reporting and hope that more editions of the IPPWS Media Awards will follow.

Thank you.
